Susan J. Koch

Distinguished Research Fellow

Dr. Susan J. Koch is an independent consultant, specializing in policy issues regarding arms reduction and the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.  She is a Distinguished Research Fellow at the National Defense University Center for the Study of Weapons of Mass Destruction, a Senior Scholar at the National Institute for Public Policy, and an associate faculty member in the Department of Defense and Strategic Studies at Missouri State University.    


From 1982 until 2007, Dr. Koch held a series of senior positions in the White House National Security Council Staff, the Office of the Secretary of Defense, the Department of State and the U.S. Arms Control and Disarmament Agency, focused on nonproliferation and arms reduction policy.  Dr. Koch began her government career in the Directorate of Intelligence of the Central Intelligence Agency, analyzing West European political issues.  

Dr. Koch has received the Presidential Distinguished Executive Award, the Presidential Meritorious Executive Award, the Department of Defense Distinguished Civilian Service Medal five times, the Arms Control and Disarmament Agency Distinguished Honor Award, and the Department of State Meritorious Honor Award.  Before her government service, she taught international and comparative politics at Mount Holyoke College and the University of Connecticut.  Dr. Koch received a B.A. from Mount Holyoke College and an M.A. and Ph.D. in political science from Harvard University.
